Student Responsibilities

What is student responsibility?
Student responsibility occurs when students take an active role in their learning by recognizing they are accountable for their academic success. Student responsibility is demonstrated when students make choices and take actions which lead them toward their educational goals. The role of the teacher is to help facilitate and support that learning.

I've always used the following analogy to try to explain it: Imagine that I am taking the whole class on a hike around the rim of the Grand Canyon. Before we set off on our path, I would give everyone instructions on where it was safe to step and where it was not. However, even though I had given very clear directions that 90% of the students can easily follow, it is possible that one or two students may still slip and fall. If you make a mistake and fall, you need to know that I will always be there for you. I will run to the edge. I will lay down on the ground and reach as far down as I can, but....

...you'll never get back up on the right path unless you also make an effort to reach for my hand.

My hand, my help, will always be there for you. Will you reach for it when you need it?

Responsible students take ownership of their actions by exhibiting the following behaviors:

  • They demonstrate academic integrity and honesty.

  • They attend and participate in classes and labs prepared and on time.

  • They complete the assigned work in a timely manner with attention to quality of work.

  • They avoid making excuses for their behavior.

  • They communicate in a respectful manner with teachers, peers, and other members of our school community.

  • They are engaged learners who dedicate sufficient time outside of class to their educational progress.

  • They act in a civil manner that respects the learning environment and complies with district policies.

  • They utilize all available resources and seek help when needed.

  • They don't expect answers for their problems, but rather guidance so they can discover the answers independently.

  • They don't give up, just because something is new and challenging

Difficult doesn't mean impossible.

It simply means that you have to apply more effort and work harder.

Nothing is Impossible

In order to reach your goals and maintain a solid understanding of the material this year, you need to plan, organize, and apply yourself.  The list of materials below will help you do just that:

** Materials that every student should bring to class EVERY DAY

  • Your charged Chromebook.**

Even though we are IN-PERSON learning, we will still be using your Chromebook often. Please make sure it is completely charged every night for the next day.

  • At least one box or set of pencils. **

Even though we will be using our Chromebooks from time to time, MOST of our class work will be on paper, so you must bring a pencil to class every single day.

  • Metric Ruler (For some homework)

This is Science, so we will ONLY be dealing in the metric system as it is the standard measurement system for ALL sciences world wide (NO MORE INCHES and FEET). The classroom has sets of Metric Rulers and meter sticks, but you are encouraged to purchase your own to have at home. PLEASE DO NOT BUY THE FLEXIBLE RULERS.

Calc.JPG
  • One Calculator - This will be used at SCHOOL and at HOME for Math and Science **

(Both your Math and Science classes have class sets of calculators that you can use, but you should have your own. You will use it  for homework and the state exams (PSSA and Keystone exams). Please also note that your cell phone calculator will not be allowed to be used during any quiz or test taken at school.)

We are recommending that all students purchase a calculator and choose the Texas Instruments TI-30XIIS calculator for use this school year. It has many capabilities that will be useful on the standardized assessments later this year and in your future math and science classes throughout the high school. It is available at Walmart, Target, and Amazon for around $10-20

Lock.jpg
  • ONE Science Three Ring Binder (Recommend size = 1 ½ to 2 inch)**

It is highly recommended that you have a separate science binder to help keep all of your papers organized throughout the entire year. (It is also a good idea to have a binder for each of your classes)

  • ONE package of 3 ring binder dividers tabs

It is recommended that you use the divider tabs to keep your papers organized within your binder. You may choose how to label them, but I have given two suggested ways below

Some example suggestions:

1 marked "Weekly Plans"
1 marked "Class Notes"
1 marked "Resources"
1 marked "Graded Homework"
1 marked "Lab Sheets"

1 marked "Unit 1: Experimental Design

  • ONE Combination Lock

It is highly recommended that you have a lock for your locker. This is the only way to safely store your personal belongs at school. Without a lock, anything you put in your locker could be stolen or vandalized.

Ohio House Supplies

red folder.JPG

EVERY Ohio house student will be REQUIRED to have a RED pocket folder. This red folder will their OHIO HOUSE "Homework" folder. We will provide labels for each student. It is the expectation of the house that your red folder should be with you in all of your classes AND that it comes home EVERY NIGHT. The idea is designed to help you keep track of and manage your work, plus gives you (and your parents) a visual of what still needs to be done and what has already been completed. Too many times when a parent asks a student, do you have homework tonight, the response is often "oh I got that done in school". This system requires that all homework (not yet finished and already completed) are always with you in school and at home. It also helps you begin to better manage your time. Maybe you have an away football game tonight and probably won't get home until late. While in science class you might finish your work early with 10-15 minutes left in the class. If you have your red folder you can use that time to also finish your ELA, Math, or Social Studies work which will remove the stress of trying to get it done after the game.

  • ONE RED Pocket folder with following labels.

** YOU WILL NOT BE GIVEN A SCIENCE BOOK THIS YEAR. Instead you will have access to an online Life Science Book, so as long as you have your Chromebook then you have your science book!

To access the book:

  1. Go to my WEBSITE, go to 7th Grade page, then go to Student Resources and click on the Science Book. This will open a PDF version of the science book.

No... we are not going to play musical instruments in Science class this year!

BAND is an awesome app for group communication.

I have used this app for many years with

Some Possible ways that BAND will be used:

  • To send reminders about assignments or events happening at our school.

  • To send follow up clarification for a difficult topic to the all students.

  • To send the video Pre-Lab instructions to the students, which will save more time for actually conducting the lab.

  • Allowing Students to ask questions and get a quick response.
